Salton Sea State Recreation Area covers 14 miles of the northeastern shore and has long been a popular site for campers, boaters and anglers.  Increasing salinity in the Salton Sea basin has limited the number of types of fish that can be found there, and most fish currently caught are Tilapia.  Varner Harbor within the SRA provides easy access to the sea for boating and water skiing.  Kayakers, campers, birdwatchers, photographers and hikers can enjoy the site’s many recreation opportunities.

Five campgrounds are available in the Salton Sea Recreation Area, holding more than 1,600 campsites. Three of the campgrounds sit along the shoreline, intended for “low-tech” camping by tent. Full-service hook ups for RCs can be found at Headquarters Camp, but park authorities strongly suggest making reservations in advance. Mecca Beach Campground also contains developed sites

Water Activities:

Boating remains a popular activity at the Salton Sea Recreation Area: the sea’s high salt content makes boats more buoyant and the atmospheric density of the low elevation lends power to boat engines. Fishing also is popular during the summer months. The recreation area contains a jetty to facilitate fishing, and Bombay Beach and Salt Creek Beach also permit fishing.

Land Activities:

Birdwatchers flock to the recreation area during winter, when the birds are migrating, and the recreation area also contains 18 miles’ worth of hiking trails. A self-guided nature trail stretches from Headquarters Camp to Mecca Beach, a distance of about a mile; free guides to the trails are available at the visitor center. The mountains that rise above the nearby desert floor provide abundant photographic opportunities.
