Salton Sea State Recreation Area covers 14 miles of the northeastern shore and has long been a popular site for campers, boaters and anglers. Increasing salinity in the Salton Sea basin has limited the number of types of fish that can be found there, and most fish currently caught are Tilapia. Birdwatchers flock to the recreation area during winter, when the birds are migrating, and the recreation area also contains 18 miles’ worth of hiking trails. A self-guided nature trail stretches from Headquarters Camp to Mecca Beach, a distance of about a mile; free guides to the trails are available at the visitor center. The mountains that rise above the nearby desert floor provide abundant photographic opportunities.
